ORIENTAL DANCE, also called belly dance, Raks al-Sharqi, or Mideastern dance, developed in the ancient Mideast or Mediterranean region and has survived through the centuries. Intricate and sensual, it is fascinating to behold, pleasurable to perform, and a good source of exercise. Migrating Mediterranean peoples have carried various forms of the dance with their cultures to many parts of the world.
Popularly associated with the romance of harem life and cabaret performers, variations of the dance have gained thousands of non-Mediterranean devotees in Western and Eastern cultures. Oriental dance as a performance art has become sufficiently wide-spread to support specialized teaching studios, newspapers, magazines, costume suppliers, dance workshops and international conventions. Interestingly, devotees of the dance also include members of medieval cultural organizations, and science fiction groups who have found links between the dance and their special interests.
