Habibi
One of the few instructional Oriental dance videos to ever receive a major
film festival award, acclaimed by dance and general interest publications
alike, and recommended by performers and instructors in the U.S. and abroad,
this two-hour program has become an International Oriental Dance Instruction
Classic. Mid-Eastern Dance is a complete course
from beginning to advanced levels, featuring internationally-renowned
performer Kathryn Ferguson. As a dancer, whether you are just beginning or have experience, you will enjoy Kathryn Ferguson's personal warmth, teaching expertise and mastery of her art. She will teach you how to combine individual steps and movements, rather than memorization of specific dance routines. This approach will help you develop personal style and variety in your dance.
The program begins with warm-up exercises of a gentle yoga nature and instruction on body alignment for a healthy posture. This section is followed by basic movements which teach muscle control and isolated movement of different parts of the body. More aerobic types of movement are added, including fast shimmy variations, steps, and body-part isolation techniques to beledy rhythms. A study of slower movements follows to taxim and chiftitelli rhythms, emphasizing grace, ease of movement and muscle stretching. Included are body waves, circles, hip sways and muscle stretching. Muscle control, understanding of Oriental rhythms and music, finger cymbals, and combinations are integrated with beautiful demonstration dances and music recorded in Egypt.
The concluding portions of the program are more abstract in nature, dealing with the art and emotions of dance, extending beyond the concerns of physical movement alone. The source of movement is considered as a gesture of the whole body, rather than isolated movements of specific body parts. Taken as a flow of gesture, the dance becomes less mechanical -- feelings become movement.
The DVD version is indexed and each disk contains an additional dance by Kathryn Ferguson.
